Chapter 14

I t was hard concentrating on the movie. I kept hearing Jolene and Cassie taking turns whispering and giggling with my date. I had hoped someone in the theater would hush them, but we were the only ones there. I slumped in my seat and frowned at the screen, purposely sipping my drink as loudly as I could.

A weird flash of purple light caught my attention across the theater. I looked over and saw my fairy godmother sitting by herself, stuffing a handful of popcorn into her mouth. She turned around to look at me and fluttered her fingers in a little wave. “I’ve forgotten how absolutely sinful this is,” she said loudly. One fluffy kernel shot from her mouth and landed on the seat beside her. Her hand flew up to her lips and she giggled sheepishly. Had anyone else heard her blaring voice, they certainly would have shushed her.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered unnecessarily. I knew she could read my thoughts, but speaking to someone was a hard habit to break.

“Who are you talking to?” Cassie asked, looking around.

I forced a laugh, and whispered quieter. “Oh, no one. I was . . . just trying to predict the next line.” Lame.

Cassie looked at me like I was crazy.

“What are you doing here?” a voice called out from the big screen.

Cassie and I both laughed, then she turned her attention back to the movie.

I looked over at Harriet, who seemed surprised. “Now that, my dear, was impressive. To answer both of your questions,” she said, nodding towards the screen, “I just wanted to inform you that where I come from, sharing potions is frowned upon.”

“I know,” I whispered. Oops. Thoughts only.

Cassie elbowed me and giggled, thinking I was still trying to predict movie lines.

Harriet shoved more popcorn into her mouth, and a few dropped down into her lap. She swallowed before continuing her lecture across the theater. “They don’t come cheap, you know. It’s not like I can whip up another batch willy-nilly.”

“I still have most of it,” I whispered. Ugh! Stop whispering.

Cassie looked down at my popcorn. “I think you pretty much finished it off. Did you want a refill?”

I almost said no, then decided it would give me a chance to talk with my fairy godmother without getting caught. “Great idea. I’ll be back.”

I got up and walked towards the door that led to the lobby. Harriet appeared next to me. I noticed she was wearing light blue, silky pajamas. White horses pulling elegant carriages was the print scattered all over them. It totally worked with her pink, fluffy slippers. Her hands flew to her hips and she raised her eyebrows at me. “My dear, once you give your love potion away, it no longer works.”

My heart sank. “Really?”

“Really.”

I thought for a minute. “So, it’s just a regular bottle of perfume now?”

“No one’s ever kept an obsolete bottle around long enough to find out. I suppose I could make an exception this time and let you keep it.
